UNLOCK SHACKLES BY SAROJ SUDAN
Written in third person POV, Unlock Shackles by Saroj Sudan is an eye opener for those who still see feel that women are a burden or who feel that girls are inferior to boys.
Initially, we are introduced to a family of four.
☘️Virendra Singh, the father and ‘Supposed’ Patriach of the family.
☘️Sarla, the mother who wants nothing but the best for her children.
☘️Pallo, a seventeen year old whose spirit was broken at every turn but she was not hopeless.
☘️Deepak, a boy who wanted to break free and try to be a better man than the ones he had been privy to.
We get to know that Virendra Singh has arranged the marriage of his daughter Pallo, who he feels was imposed upon him, to a forty five year man just because they were accepting her without dowry.
Unable to come to terms with this, Pallo vents out her frustration to her aunt, a renowned and famous lawyer, who suggests that they all leave the village and move with her to the city.
From there, Pallo, now renamed as Pallavi begins her journey. And what an amazing and inspirational journey it was. She not only studies hard, gets scholarship and becomes an IAS, but she also becomes the voice of many others.
Pallavi alone wasn't enough to change the world, but she did inspire the world to change. She couldn't rewrite her past, but with her dedication and fierce attitue of achieving her goal, she did write her future.
It is sad, but in reality, even after all these slogans of Gender equality, females are still treated as dirt. It was assuring to see that atleast Pallavi’s family came to terms with the fact that when you have capability, being a boy or girl doesn't /won't matter.
💕Things that I liked in the book💕
I liked the chemistry between Sudha and Vineet. After not giving chance to anyone, I was glad that Sudha finally gave chance to him.
It was lovely to see Sarla grow stronger each day.
The few chapters about the wedding, which were so vivid with description were my favorite.
Loved that this had a happy ending. Pallavi not only achieved her dreams, but also beghast others to see a dream.
It was so heartbreaking yet so inspiring that her father realised the error of his ways and gave the responsibility of his final, last rite to his daughter.
💕My thoughts on the book💕
I loved this book and am going to recommend it to all misgonyst people out there who feel that a woman’s place is in the kitchen, or that they are weaker. Atleast after reading this book, they will be able to understand the power of what a girl can do if she puts her mind to it. I'm going to give this book FIVE UNLOCK STARS⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
