REVIEW OF SLAY TWO: RUIN BY LAURELIN PAIGE

Written in first person POV, Ruin by Laurelin Paige is the second book of Slay Quartret. ‘Slay One: Rivalry’ should be read first. It picks up right where the first book ends and spans over a time of one year.

The blurb is as follows:

With her heart literally in his hands, Celia will have to try and bargain with a devil.

Edward Fasbender is my captor.

Trapped on this island he owns everything on--including, it seems, me.

He told me he would break me, but I thought he meant in the bedroom. It turns out Edward is playing a completely different game.

And he won't stop until he's ruined me.

My review:

I felt the cliffhanger (Edward’s confession that he wants to kill Celia) at the end of the first book ‘Rivalry’ was non productive, fruitless and ineffectual. Well, for starters, I knew he wouldn’t actually kill her, how else can there be two more books? And second: I have read Chandler and Fixed Forever, so I know that Edward and Celia are happily married and also have an adorable daughter.
Still, I was eager to know about what had happened for Edward to nurse such an enormous hatred for Celia.

We get to know his motives and why he wants to destroy Celia, but for me, they weren’t such strong reasons. Also, he had the vital information wrong and if you are targeting someone, atleast get your facts checked.

My thoughts on Celia:

While reading Fixed Series, I always thought of Celia as a ‘Mean Girl on Steroids.’ But after reading ‘Ruin’, my opinion of her has changed vastly. Circumstances made her the way she is and after knowing her story, I have genuinely started liking her.

My thoughts on Edward:

I loved Edward so much in the first book that I immediately qualified him as a contender for my ‘Best Book Boyfriends’ list even without waiting to know more about him from the other three books.
While reading the initial chapters of Ruin, I felt like it was a huge mistake. He was such a snob. But then we get his POV, lo and behold, he once again gains my love. He is extremely alpha, but he doesn't have to beat women ij order to prove that he is superior or to gain respect or have their submission. It just comes naturally to him, without any effort. He didn't demand Celia’s capitulation, but he has it completely.

My thoughts on the book:

The majority of the book is on the island and basically between just Celia and Edward. There were few scenes with the staff members and his sister, and one sequence at the end with few men, but other than that, nothing. I wanted to read how Celia changes Edward’s family dynamics. How their marriage will affect his children. How will Edward interact with her parents. Nada.
Edward helps Celia come out of a protective shell that she has put around herself to protect herself from heartbreak and it was so lovely to see her so docile, yet not be a doormat.
There are few mentions of Hudson and after hearing about him in Celia’s monologue, I wanted to hate him. He has painted Celia as a villain in front of Alayna, but he forgets that he had a major hand in shaping her and making her the way she is today.
After finishing the book, I was so bummed and wanted to read more about Celia and Edward, so I re-read Fixed Forever, where they have done a cameo and I have now got a better understanding of what the future holds for my favorite couple.

P. S: No hate to the model, but who else thinks that the cover doesn't do Edward any justice? I have imagined Edward way different from the one being showcased on the cover.

My rating:

I will be giving this book 4 Stars hoping that there is some more plot and drama in the next book⭐⭐⭐⭐

About the Author:

With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. Her international success started with her very first series, the Fixed Trilogy, which, alone, has sold over 1 million copies, and earned her the coveted #1 spot on Amazon’s bestseller list in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, simultaneously. This title also was named in People magazine as one of the top 10 most downloaded books of 2014. She’s also been #1 over all books at the Apple Book Store with more than one title in more than one country. She’s published both independently and with MacMillan’s St. Martin’s Press and Griffin imprints as well as many other publishers around the world including Harper Collins in Germany and Hachette/Little Brown in the U.K. With her edgy, trope-flipped stories of smart women and strong men, she’s managed to secure herself among today’s romance royalty.

Paige has a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Theater and a Masters of Business Administration with a Marketing emphasis, and she credits her writing success to what she learned from both programs, though she’s also an avid learner, constantly trying to challenge her mind with new and exciting ideas and concepts. While she loves psychological thrillers and witty philosophical books and entertainment, she is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching shows like Game of Thrones, Letterkenny and Discovery of Witches, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She's also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn't do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She currently lives outside Austin, Texas and is represented by Rebecca Friedman.
